Abu Zaabal Revives Old Sulfuric Acid Plant
Helping customers produce, optimize or separate essential elements every day
Elessent Clean Technologies is a global leader in process technologies to drive sustainability and carbon neutrality in the metals, fertilizer, chemicals and oil refining industries.
From metals, fertilizer to refining, chemicals, and beyond…our mission is to deliver the technology and tailored solutions our customers need to more efficiently produce cleaner products for the world. From the production of carbonless energy to the production of sulfuric acid for the metals and fertilizer industries, and from removal of sulfur from refined oil products to air pollution control, Elessent creates clean alternatives to traditional industrial processes to minimize the impact on the environment while enabling our customers to produce essential elements critical to everyday life.
Reducing Acid Consumption: Maximizing Sulfuric Acid Alkylation Unit Profitability
Alkylation is a process used to produce highly branched isoparaffins from the reaction of lighter olefins and isobutane in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst. This highly branched isoparaffins is called alkylate – a blending component that constitutes approximately 10% – 15% of the gasoline pool in the U.S. Besides the ability to increase octane and lower Reid vapor pressure (RVP) in the gasoline pool, alkylate also reduce vehicles exhaust emissions with zero olefins, zero aromatics and low sulfur.
MECS® Advanced Catalysts Help Manage and Reduce Sulphuric Acid Plant Emissions
Catalyst is at the heart of all sulphuric acid plants and plays a critical role
in plant performance. This article provides an overview of the specific design
features of two new types of MECS® sulphuric acid catalyst developed by DuPont Clean Technologies (DuPont), XLP-310 and SuperGEAR™, and explains how these more advanced catalyst types can be applied to reduce emissions or increase the capacity of a sulphuric acid plant.
Emissions Control Solutions for Carbon Black Production Exhaust Gas
Across the globe, governments and communities are focused on reducing pollutants that have adverse environmental and health effects. Particulate, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are of specific concern. Carbon black production has been recognized as an industry that needs to address stack emissions by many countries, communities and operators. By the nature of the feedstocks used, which are derivatives of coal, natural gas and oil, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is present in the off gas. The formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) is also expected in the reactor
based on process temperatures. To curb emissions of SOx and NOx, many carbon black producers have incorporated low sulfur fuels, low NOx burners and heat recovery into their process. However, there is a direct relationship between carbon black production plant size and exhaust gas volume. Thus, with recent industry consolidation and construction of larger plants, exhaust gas volumes have increased. With environmental regulations continually tightening, producers may need to consider new, more robust exhaust gas emissions control options to further drive down emissions.

Orlen Lietuva Contracts DuPont Clean Technologies for STRATCO® Alkylation Technolology
WILMINGTON, Del., DuPont Clean Technologies (DuPont) has been awarded the contract to supply ORLEN Lietuva (ORLEN) with licensing, engineering, and technical services for a STRATCO® alkylation unit and a MECS® spent acid regeneration (SAR) unit at the Mažeikiai refinery in Mažeikiai, Lithuania. The Mažeikiai refinery processes an average of 8 million tons of crude per year with capacity of up to 10 million tons of crude per year. In order to increase refinery complexity and flexibility of the Mažeikiai refinery, ORLEN commissioned DuPont for a STRATCO® alkylation unit with 240 kmta (6,000 bpsd) alkylate capacity. The alkylation unit will utilize LPG in the conversion to alkylate, and therefore upgrade refinery profitability. The 75 mtpd MECS® SAR unit, also under license from DuPont, will provide the refinery with a consistent supply of sulfuric acid, which is utilized as the catalyst for the alkylation unit, while ensuring compliance with the region’s stringent emission regulations.
Chilean Oil Refiner ENAP Refineries S.A. has Selected BELCO® Scrubbing Technology to Improve Emissions Control from FCC Unit
Wilmington, DE, Chilean oil refiner ENAP Refinerías S.A. has selected BELCO® scrubbing technology, licensed by DuPont Clean Technologies (DuPont), to improve emissions control from its 31,449 BPSD fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit at the Aconcagua refinery. This new BELCO® wet scrubber will reduce sulfur oxide and particulate emissions from the FCCU (fluid catalytic cracking unit) to well below Chilean emissions requirements. This will be the second BELCO® Scrubber for ENAP. ENAP previously commissioned a BELCO® scrubber for its FCCU at the BioBio refinery in 2018
